That dream became The Birdwood. They purchased the Birdwood Corner in 2017 and transformed the former picture framing and print shop into the Pizzeria and Eatery, opening in April 2018. Their vision: to create a vibrant community hub where locals and visitors alike could enjoy great food and genuine hospitality.

The challenges of COVID-19 only deepened their gratitude for the incredible Birdwood team—some of whom have been with them for over a decade—and the unwavering support of the Beckenham community.

Together with their three children—Ella, Harper, and Kobe—Nick and Sarah have created more than just a restaurant. The Birdwood is a true local, built on good food, warm service, and a deep connection to the community.

Originally from Poole, Dorset on England’s South Coast, Nick Freeman began his culinary career in local hotels before moving to London, where he held roles at the Ritz, Le Pont de la Tour, and later became Head Chef at Cecconi’s in Mayfair. After years in the industry, he moved to Christchurch to raise a family.

Sarah’s journey into hospitality was shaped by her background in education, youth support, and fitness. Her belief in the power of good food and great people naturally led her to the world of hospitality.

In 2006, Nick and Sarah opened Freemans in Lyttelton, steering it through the challenges of the earthquakes and a nine-month closure before selling in 2018 to pursue a bigger dream.

At The Birdwood, we believe a great meal is more than what’s on the plate — it’s about who you share it with.

Whether you’re here for a coffee, a slice, or a celebration, we’re grateful to be part of your day.
